WINGED ONES

FLAMINGO

Balance

Flamingo standing in water

Found in some of the most inhospitable places on the earth, Flamingo is not just another pretty pink bird. Life in the hot salt flats of Africa’s Rift Valley is not for sissies. However, Flamingo does it with ease and beauty.

Flamingo is suited to his harsh life. His long legs keep Him above the salty water. His boomerang-shaped bill filters out what Flamingo does not want to eat. In addition, Flamingo can hold his head upside down, enabling Him not to drink the briny water, when He feeds.

Another aspect of his toughness is Flamingo’s willingness to live in large flocks. Together the Flamingos watch out for Each Other. When the dry season comes, He and his entire Flock disappear suddenly from their home. Surprisingly, you will find Him on an even more inaccessible salt flat raising his Chicks. When the breeding season is over, Flamingo and His Friends march off in platoons to yet another flat. (During the dry season, the more inaccessible areas are safer from predators.)

Flamingo teaches balance. In his salt flats, He is never alone, but somehow He keeps his individuality. Flamingo balances the adverse conditions of the seaside wetlands and high Andes with his toughness and beauty. Be like Flamingo and flourish with beauty.
